While new skills have been developed by people doing case management, the essential paradigm of case management hasn’t changed in decades. The very term case manager implies that the job seeker is some form of “case” that needs to be managed! How would you feel about being called a case and told that you needed to be managed? Some very good results come from traditional case management approaches, but if you reinvent the model a lot more can be accomplished. In traditional models case managers are teachers and job seekers are passive students supposedly absorbing what the teacher tells them and doing it. The problem is our job seekers don’t listen and don’t feel truly empowered by this process to make real change in their lives. After a session case managers often find themselves with longer to-do lists than their clients! Also, once clients leave your desk other people in their lives take over and these anti-work "case managers" often have more influence than you do and wipe out everything that was accomplished in the session.
